The local currency is the Turkish Lira (TL), but Cyprus pounds, sterling, deutschmarks, and US dollars may often be used directly. Major credit cards are accepted in some shops and hotels.
Cash and travelers checks may be changed in banks, but the visitor may find a more favorable rate at the moneychangers. It is recommended that small amounts are changed as required, as hard currencies tend to rise against the TL as time goes by.
In North Cyprus, numerous Turkish and Turkish Cypriot banks operate and they are open from Monday to Friday (except public holidays) between 08.00-12.00/14.00-16.00 hours. Turkish lira is used as the local currency. Exchanging all the currencies in banks, exchange offices and in hotels, is possible. Visa card, credit card, master and euro cards, checks etc. can be used in place of cash.
